T. Walker's Insight:

In September 1862, Union forces under William Rosecrans slammed into Sterling Prices Confederates just south of Iuka. It was a bloodbath. Soldiers fought hand-to-hand over a single artillery battery, the 11th Ohio, where forty-eight out of fifty-four men fell in under two hours. But Ulysses S. Grant missed the entire fight. He sat just a few miles north with thousands of fresh troops. He heard absolutely nothing. A bizarre atmospheric phenomenon known as an acoustic shadow carried the roar of the cannons away from his position. So, Rosecrans fought alone in the dust and smoke.

Price managed to slip away under the cover of darkness. He escaped. This ruined Grants grand plan to trap and destroy the Confederate army in Mississippi. Still, the battle stopped Price from reinforcing Rebel forces in Kentucky. That mattered. Today, the site looks mostly like ordinary Mississippi woods and fields, but the red dirt still holds minie balls and old iron. The National Register listing protects what remains of this chaotic collision. Without it, asphalt would have swallowed these ridges.
